Matty Healy’s Mom, Denise Welch, Has Confirmed His Engagement To Gabbriette Bechtel, And Revealed That He Got The Black Diamond Ring Custom Made For Her

Denise, who was previously caught liking an Instagram post shading Matty’s ex Taylor Swift, has said that Gabbriette is “everything” she would want in a daughter-in-law.

Well, it’s official! Matty Healy is engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel after nine months of dating.

The couple made their exciting news Instagram official on Tuesday night while attending a Charli XCX concert in New York City.

However, the blasé nature of the announcement, which Matty shared to his Instagram story amid a meme dump, left some people wondering if it was for real.

While at Charli’s concert, Gabbriette shared a photo of her left hand on somebody’s butt, with a black stone ring that matches her gothic aesthetic front and center.

She added: “MARRYING THE 1975 IS VERY BRAT” before tagging Matty’s Instagram account, with the British singer then adding her post to his story. 

Gabbriette followed up with a mirror selfie that showed off the ring again, and Matty’s mom, Denise Welch, has now revealed that Matty got the black diamond ring especially made for her.

Confirming the engagement on her daytime TV show Loose Women, Denise explained: “I have known for a few weeks that Matty got engaged. They went over to see their friends Charli and George in New York, I woke up this morning to the fact that they’ve put it on Instagram! Instagram official, he has got engaged to Gabriella Bechtel, Gabbriette she’s known as.”

“Black diamond,” she added of the ring. “He had it made for her, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. She’s from Los Angeles. She’s absolutely gorgeous.”

At this point, a photo of Denise and Gabbriette with Gabbriette’s pet rat was shown on screen, with Denise quipping: “She does have a rat, Splinter! Anyway, we couldn’t be happier, she’s everything that I would want in a daughter-in-law, so I’m thrilled.”

Gabbriette has been wearing her engagement ring in photos since June 1 but did not acknowledge it publicly until now. It’s also obvious that Matty paid close attention to her style when getting the ring made, as it is incredibly similar to one that she has worn on other fingers in the past.

Matty’s engagement news comes just over a year after his highly publicized and seriously messy fling with pop star Taylor Swift came to an abrupt end.

Taylor seemingly opened up about this romance on her album The Tortured Poets Department, which was released in April.


Through her music, Taylor suggests that she and Matty enjoyed a nine-year on-again, off-again situationship of sorts, which was rekindled toward the end of her six-year relationship with Joe Alwyn.


Taylor sings about being love-bombed after splitting from Joe as she seemingly accuses Matty of preying on her vulnerabilities by promising her marriage and children.


Taylor was heavily criticized for dating Matty at the time due to his long history of alleged racism, which included him admitting that he masturbates to Black women being “brutalized,” and doing an alleged Nazi salute on stage just months earlier. 


Then, after just a few weeks of officially dating, Taylor's songs suggests that Matty abruptly ghosted her — leaving her absolutely devastated. 


She started dating NFL star Travis Kelce the following month, and Matty moved on with Gabbriette two months after that.  


After The Tortured Poets Department was released, Denise was caught liking an Instagram post shading Taylor’s music.
